At midnight Friday, the brand-new group 93 PUNX, an alternative rock/ rap outfit breasted by Chicago master Vic Mensa, will release the music video for their debut single” Camp America .”
And boy, is it provoking.
The video represents white children in orange jumpsuits joyously revelling as they’re being tortured and held in enclosures, with Mensa rapping,” We’ll be living it up , not leaving a fuck/ Splitting you up, then we put you in cuffs/ Then we sending you off/ Yeah, you could get lost at Camp America .”
It ends with a send in white-hot type against a pitch-black background:” There are over 13,000 immigrant children in U.S. incarceration today. What if it was your child ?”
” The song’s lyricals were inspired by ICE director Matthew Albence comparing the immigration detention centers to summer camps ,” Mensa tells The Daily Beast.” I thought that was a crazy fucking theme and wanted to create a world with this song that imagined that changed alternate world, where it was fun for kids to be held as prisoners, sucking out of lavatories, away from their parents, and somehow enjoy it like one might at a summer camp .”
You can watch the video now prior to its midnight premiere, alone at The Daily Beast 😛 TAGEND
According to Mensa, the moment he booked the song he envisaged the channel the video would play out.” My intention for using white boys as opposed to minority progenies is to point out the blatantly self-evident happening that this would never happen to white girls in this country or maybe anywhere on this land ,” he asks.” Although the specific features of specific actions the girls were involved in were graphic or offending, it was all taken from actual appearances reported at’ imprisonment’ middles .”
The musician goes on to reassure sees that,” All of the children’s mothers were present and the children were really smart and understood the political statement being made–they wanted to be a part of it. Nothing about this is about shaming white juveniles; it’s about showing that this simply would never happen to white babes .”
” The science illustrates that early childhood trauma( like being rent from your mother’s weapons) has devastating effects on the development of a child ,” he includes.” That’s why I obliged the song .”
